Upcoming Pigeon Forge Trip

Coaster Critic Updates

Soon, I’ll be heading to the Great Smoky Mountains of Eastern Tennessee. We’re looking forward to a first-time visit to Dollywood as a family. By the time we visit, they’ll have announced their highly anticipated 2016 attraction (scheduled for August 7th). So, I hope to have some fresh construction photos and the latest scoop on the ride. It’s rumored to be a launched woodie or hybrid roller coaster, but we’ll know for sure in a few days.

I’m sure my kids will have a blast at Dollywood. The park has a solid lineup of rides for families and kids including Firechaser Express; which I’m sure my 8 year old will love. My 5 year old is an aspiring fashion designer so the Dolly Parton’s Chasing Rainbows Museum might be one of her favorite attractions. She’s already remarked about the dresses that are on display and it’ll be neat to learn about Dolly’s story.

Alpine Coasters

I didn’t realize there were so many alpine coasters in the area. There’s the Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster, The Coaster at Goats on the Roof, and the longest alpine coaster in the U.S., The Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster.

Here’s a video of Clint from Coaster Crew riding The Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster:

As you may know, I’m a huge fan of terrain roller coasters, so these roller coaster-like attractions are right up my alley. I’ve been looking forward to riding an alpine coaster for years and I hope to finally ride one on this trip. Has anyone ridden any of them?

Any Recommendations for Pigeon Forge & Gatlinburg Area

Aside from Dollywood, do you have any can’t miss attractions we should check out? My daughters are 8 and 5. So, we probably won’t do any zip lining, but if you have any other recommendations, let me know. Leave a comment below.

Founder of CoasterCritic.com. My favorite coasters are B&M hypers and gigas. I'm also a huge fan of terrain roller coasters.

    • Thank you for reigniting my Elvis crush, V! One seummr (between 4th and 5th grade, I think), I actually sat my little butt down indoors and watched the entire Elvis movie marathon on AMC. Elvis goes to Hawaii, Elvis is a lifeguard at a local camp, Elvis is a studly waiter I watched it all, and I was mesmerized. So I totally get you here.Little known fact: My favorite Elvis song is actually Return To Sender.’ Nice little rhymes he’s got going into that chorus a precursor to Ludacris’ Hos in Different Area Codes.’

  3. You will love Alpine coasters Joel. Try hard to do all 3.
    I have done 3.
Wisp ski resort in Maryland, at Okemo ski resort in Vermont, and at Camelback ski area in Penn.
All were very fun but the one at Camelback was far superior. Only because they put a little bit more banking into the turns. This made it way easier to go full throttle the whole way!
Look into which is fastest if you can only do 1
I can’t wait to see your first Alpine Coaster review.

  4. Get away from the Pigeon Forge/ Gatlinburg mini golf scene for a while and take your family hiking in the Smoky Mtns. Avoid popular trails on the weekend though, if possible (just like theme parks!)
P.S. I am over the moon about Lightning Rod- I guess you’ll just have to come back again, eh?!
