Launch Coaster Projekt Helix Announced for Liseberg

Sweden’s Liseberg has announced Projekt Helix for 2014. Helix will be a launched roller coaster similar to Europa Park’s BlueFire Megacoaster. It might seem like it’s a bit early to announce a 2014 ride, but this will be a signature roller coaster for the park and the ride’s designer as it’ll be the largest ride to date for both. Helix will be a Mack launched roller c...[Read More]

Six Flags Mexico Announces The Joker for 2013

Six Flags Mexico recently announced their 2013 roller coaster, The Joker. I’d link to the press release, but I fear that most of my readers won’t be able to understand it. The Joker looks to be a well-themed conversion of Six Flags Discovery Kingdom’s Pandemonium. The Gerstlauer Spinning coaster debuted at that park in 2008, and now it’s making its way south to Mexico City....[Read More]

Thunder Dolphin | Most Wanted Roller Coasters

Thunder Dolphin Looks Like Urban Coaster Goodness! I’ve always been a fan of terrain coasters as they utilize the unique layout of the land that they sit on. A roller coaster like Thunder Dolphin uses the man-made terrain of Tokyo as riding along the top of buildings and diving down through a cut-out in one, and then flying through the hub of a Ferris wheel. As I’ve argued in the past,...[Read More]

Whoa! Check Out Wodan

Europa Park’s Wodan – Timburcoaster has to be one of the best-themed wooden roller coasters I’ve ever seen. The queue looks amazing with plenty of detail bringing the Norse world to this German park. One image I came across referenced “bifrost”. If you saw the Thor movie, then you might remember that was the name of the rainbow bridge from Earth to Asgard. Anyway, Eur...[Read More]

Most Wanted | Formula Rossa – World’s Fastest Roller Coaster

While I wouldn’t call Kingda Ka the best roller coaster it is an experience that I recommend every coaster fan or thrill seeker should try at least once. The feeling of that 128 mph launch is incredible. I’m sure Cedar Point’s Top Thrill Dragster gives a similarly exhilarating ride. I wouldn’t know as it broke down while I was in the queue. Having said that, I’m not t...[Read More]

7 Best New Roller Coasters Opening in Eurasia

With this The Coaster Critic’s Blog, I try to straddle the line a bit. I’m hoping it’s both a resource for the average theme park-goer as well as a place for the die hard theme park geeks. When I decided to simplify my annual top new coasters list (Part 1 & Part 2) and only focus on North America, I had no idea how many of the geeks out there would be expecting the worldly co...[Read More]

The First Humans Survive The Swarm at Thorpe Park

Thorpe Park’s The Swarm Has Its First Riders Surrey, England’s Thorpe Park is putting the finishing touches on their new wing roller coaster, The Swarm. Recently, four former fighter pilots braved the great-looking coaster. I love the look of the trains. Instead of an eagle (like Dollywood’s Wild Eagle) or a jet (Six Flags Great America’s X-Flight) theme for the trains, The...[Read More]

Father & Son Stuck in Roller Coaster Loop

Riders Stuck in Roller Coaster Loop at Zibo Yudaihu Lake Zoology Garden Yesterday, ScreamScape reported on a story of an unusual roller coaster accident in China. Earlier this week, a father and a son were stuck in the vertical loop of a shuttle loop coaster some 15 meters (50 feet) above the ground. The usual rescue efforts were scrapped after fire fighters had trouble setting up their equipment ...[Read More]

The Swarm is Coming to Thorpe Park in 2012

While I’ve written about Thorpe Park’s LC12 as it was named, I haven’t re-visited the project since it received an official name and more information has emerged. This excellent (You)Report from ‘across the pond’ breaks down the ride in greater detail. Thorpe Park has released a trailer advertising its new 2012 coaster. Re-named ‘The Swarm’ after its tease...[Read More]

Top 3 Most Wanted European Theme Parks

While I’ve yet to make it across the pond to visit any of the great theme parks in Europe, I’ve had my eyes on several parks over there for years. In this week’s Top 3 Thursdays I’m going to list (in no particular order) the theme parks that I’d like to visit the most in the Old Country. As usual, my list is focused on their World-class roller coasters and not the gue...[Read More]

Takabisha at Fuji-Q Highland – Test Video

Takabisha is a new Euro-Fighter opening at Fuji-Q Highland in Yamanashi, Japan. This is the largest Gerstlauer coaster ever. It features a 121 degree drop that is so steep that it counts as another inversion! The ride includes a launch, a vertical lift, 7 inversions, plus more! This looks like it may be the best Euro-Fighter yet. Supporting Link: http://coasterguy.wordpress.com/2011/06/30/takabish...[Read More]
